Robert: Au contrair. I spent my whole useable life in the Army and
am quite familiar with the M 151 and 151A1 "tactical vehicle". It was
fielded in the early sixties (circa 1961) as a replacement for the
M38. (A military version of a CJ 5). The 151 was designed to
optimize its off road capabilities and in this mode it was a major
improvement over the M38. It also happened to have, for its day, a
sports car feel......it waslight, it would go like snot; very
responsive engine, great gear box and would go places with less
punishment to its occupants than its predecessors. The vehicle was
not designed to be a highway car. It was placarded for a maximum hard
surface speed of 45MPH. The handling problem became acute when a
young/inexperienced, aggressive operator tried to play Stirling Moss
on the hard top. Now jeeps is jeeps and they have been rolling over
since their inception at the beginning of WW2. It is the nature of
the beast. The replacement for the M151 is the Hummer. So the roll
over problem is now solved by having an axle as wide as a football
field. The acquisition cost of the 151 was about $5000. Care to
guess how much our Uncle pays for each Hummer? Additionally, the
"HUM-V" cant go places that the 151 or M38 could go. The M151 was
never legally surplused, except as a cut up pile of steel. A pity, as
it was a really neat vehicle that got caught up in a Nader mentality
and was banished for all the wrong reasons. So relax Rick, your tax
money was well spent, at least until the bean counters and safety
