I was taught that the greater the spread in VI numbers, the more additives 
and likely the lesser quality, given a choice. I was told that the lower 
number is at best the starting grade, the rest is accomplished with 
additives. The advent of synthetics might break that rule, however. Also be 
aware that the reason for low VI numbers being recommended comes from CAFE 
ratings rather than optimal lubrication.
