It depends on the power the engine produces and how fast you like to drive.

I have a 3.9 on a five speed that has a ratio of 2.92 for 1st!  This means I 
don't get to win traffic light grands prix unless I smoke the tyres, opposite 
lock for the inevitable tail slide (quaife diff) and make a lot of noise.  Of 
course if it is rolling start I always win.

On the other hand I can cruise at a legal or thereabouts 3,500rpm about 70 or 
4,000rpm at 80 even 4,2000 at 85mph.

You have to think about how you are going to drive.
