Once I discovered that it was indeed the spring at fault, that's what I was 
going
to do.  But the spring compresses so much that the rear shackle at rest is at
this extreme angle due to spring stretch as it compresses.  It just isn't
confidence inspiring.  So, I think a new spring is the answer.
