It was actually a spin-off of Nissan for the international market. If it
flopped they didn't want to hurt their real brand name image. After a few
years of staying in bizness, they went back to their real name Nissan. For a
year or two, they have both "datsun" and "Nissan" on the back of the cars.

Of course now its owned by Renault! go figure! They have made a nice
comeback though since being bought out by the French. Surprisingly enough.
