David, with all due respect, at the time you adjusted the valve you 
should/could have noticed the problem. I had a similar experience with one 
of my Landies, and at the point where I noticed my .010" feeler gauge 
SIDEWAYs wasn't enough, I caught on that the fully compressed spring with 
the loose valve adjuster was likely the culprit.
         You have my sympathies up to that point, but after?..............
         So, what was the cause..... new valve job with dem fancy bronze 
guides? as was my case. Did you bend a pushrod too? as i did.
