Fergie:

You probably have all the advice you ever wanted by now, but let me throw in
something I came across a while back, in case no one else has suggested it
already. Go to our neighborhood Morgan site:

www.team.net/www/morgan/tech

You will find a series of articles, including some listed under "Body Work."
Here the link to The Panel Doctor is very helpful and the one to the
Autobody Store (www.autobodystore.com) is a well-organized but brief
tutorial on everything related to autobody restoring, refinishing, or
detailing PLUS a source of products. It's a whole lot easier to browse the
products and the descriptions than it is to walk into an autobody supply
house and deal with a condescending counter guy who treats you like a moron
when you don't know a glaze from a swirl remover. Another rersource is the
BBS link for questions and helpful responses from the proprietor.

As to your spray can primer: my 2 cents.....it ain't like using a spray
gun, but at home with few other alternatives if we cheap, it can do what you
need done for the primer coat. However, I would recommedn you go to an auto
paint supply store and buy only the "professional" product, which will come
in a bigger spray can and cost you between $6 and $12 a can. You can prep
bare metal with a 1-step "quick-prep" to promote adhesion and scuff up good
paint areas with a Scotchbrite pad. If you "prep" bare metal, you don't
need a self-etching primer, but you do need a "sandable primer." This is
primer with a little filler in it. It gives you thicker coating which you
can get really smooth by block sanding. The price you pay for the spray can
convenience and economy is that what ever you put on top of it will always
be limited by the adhesion characteristics of your primer. And, in some
cases, if you ever went to a high-tech color coat, you might experience
compatibility problems. (This may never come up if you remain guided by
your wallet. ;-)
