Hi List,
I just put in a used ribcase transmission in my 1962 Sprite. I disassembled
it, cleaned it, and replaced only seals and reshimmed the mainshaft, because
everything else looked pretty good (it was supposedly "rebuilt" just prior to
being given to me).
I have one problem. About half the time, I have to let the clutch out in
between 2nd and third, in order for it to go into third. This is accompanied
by a small "clunk", after which it goes into third just fine. It feels like
it's not coming all the way out of second until torque is applied, and then it
pops out. If I don't let the cluth out in neutral, it just won't allow me to
select third.
The other half of the time the transition from 2nd to third is normal. All
other gears seem to work fine, and the synchros seem good too.
Any experts out there know the cause of this problem? Is it likely to do more
serious damage if I continue to drive it this way? Thanks in advance.
