when functioning properly they work just fine! it goes without saying that
there are 2 sets of points that must be maintained. now, they do really
work well! but over the years i have had problems with the brass posts on
wich the points fit, working their way loose from the breaker plate. the
post is peened or swedged on the bottom side of the breaker plate. the posts
have never literally come out of their holes(but they do come loose)!
honestly i atribute the posts coming loose to the softness of the metal
being used and the high tension of the breaker arm spring. it has been my
experience that once the post works it's way loose it no longer will
properly function there after.
the post can be reset tighter in the hole if you completly remove the plate
but caution! the post may seem to be secure untill you assemble the dist.
and reinstall it to find you have a wandering dwell. under tension of the
point spring a reset post will wobble just enough to not retain a constant
swell again. i feel this has led some users of this distributor to yank
them out and refit a lucas dist. . personally i'd like a mallory for my
project 948 i'll be building in the next year or so. if anyone outthere
has a mallory they love to hate? i'm interested!
