Charlie,
I'll assume you've got the same problems I had and are
trying to install an aftermarket radio / CD player in
your Spridget. Bugsy my '68 Sprite doesn't have an
accessory position. The Sony CD playr I purchased has
two power leads. One is primary power for the CD
Player the other maintains memory, clock, etc. I
originally tied both leads to the radio wire inside
the console that has power on at all times.
Unfortunately that also meant that all of the lights
inside the CD player remained on at all times. I
didn't feel comfortable keeping the radio powered up
at all times even when car was turned off.
There is a switched terminal in the fusebox that works
when the ignition switch is turned on. Once the Red
Power Lead was connected when the key goes off, all of
the lights in the CD Player go off as well. Yellow
wire still provides power for memory & clock and is
powered at all times.
Great I thought all works. Unfortunately this setup
doesn't provide a means to run the radio with the
ignition switch off. Sitting still with Ign switch on
means fuel pump is running continuously and pumping
gas all over the ground where when the float on the
front carburetor sticks. Not a safe operating
condition at any time.
Solution, I went to Radio Shack and found a small
SPDT(Single Pole Double Throw) 6 amp mini switch. I
mounted switch on the bracket under dash by heater
switch. Center wire of the switch is connected to the
Red power wire on the CD Player. One terminal is
connected to the wire coming from the fusebox that
provides 12V when IGN switch is on. The other terminal
connects to a 12V always on power source. In this case
I connected to the original power wire for the radio,
the same wire that is providing continuous 12V power
for the clock and memory of the CD Player.
So now if I want to park under the stars with my
favorite gal and listen to romantic music instead of a
noisy fuel pump all I need to do is flip this SPDT
Switch one way or the other. It solves the problem, is
hidden out of the way, and only took a few minutes to
hook up.
BTW, if you opt to go this way. Make sure all power
leads are fused. Use proper connectors with solder
connections not crimp on connections. Buy a package of
heat shrink tubing, $1.59 at Sears Hardware. Solder
the connections, cover with heat shrink tubing, a
little quick work with a lighter and voila great,
permanent, non shorting electrical connections.
