Sorry, but nothing new about this sort of
thing, Jim, with original set-up. Real PITA, though, when it happens, as
it almost never happens in your driveway, for sure!
"Action" of the stock Lucas set-up really
does a "number" on the ring gear over
time, no doubt about it.
Gerard's got the answer, ok.
While installing new motor, took the
opportunity to convert to the smaller
and much lighter Rivergate "geared"
unit. We took it apart to inspect it before
installation: quality internals according
to my mechanic (40 years in the business).
It will definitely outlast me!!
