Not the same stuff:

Sodium carbonate (washing soda) is Na2Co3
Bicarbonate of soda is NaHCo3Geoff Branch
'74 Meejit "Yellow Peril"
'72 Innocenti 1300 Mini

Don't know if it does the same thing.  Both are strong bases.

label.  100% Bicarb.
