It sounds like you let the smoke out of your ignition > fuse box wire.
Not positive on the 71 but I think there are 2 white wires, 1 from the
key to the coil via the tach, the other from the key to the fuse box.
Take a peak under the dash and check that white wire, it may have come
in contact with metal. There is no other reason it would have smoked.
