Glenn -

The best set-up seems to be:
Good quality gasket dressing (applied properly) between the gasket and 
the valve cover.
A thin smear of grease between the gasket and head.

That way the gasket will seal, and you should be able to reuse that 
gasket for many years/valve adjustments.
