Thread-topic: Coolant Leakage
It's overheating AFTER spitting enough coolant that there's not much left in
the radiator. I'll be checking it out probably tomorrow night after work for
the things you suggested. Does anyone know what cap will fit this car so I can
go get a replacement to test? (it's a 71 midget crossflow) (isn't there some
type of "common" cap that will do the trick?)

Thanks,
Mike

Mike:

Is it overheating while it's spitting water
or does it spit water 'til it empties the cooling system, THEN
overheats.
(Sort of a which came first situation...
the chicken or the egg.)

In the former case you most likely have
an engine problem as in compression leaking out of the combustion
chamber(s)
into the cooling system overpressurizing
same.

In the latter case, it could be
most likely a partially sealing cooling system (might need the "right"
cap if
not necessarily a "new" cap?) Have
you had the system pumped up to spec.
and checked it's "sealing" properties?

You know, the only thing the "sealed"
system does is raise the boiling point
of the fluid. You can drive the car all day
without a cap and not have problems
with overheating assuming an engine in
good shape.

You can check for compression loss into
the cooling system by checking the reservoir tank for "bubbles" once the
engine is thoroughly warmed up and the
thermostadt is obviously open. In the event of a leaky head gasket in
this respect, this will "tell the tale".

Let us know what you find.
