Carter-

Clive's response pretty much sums it up,
I think. White smoke IS indicative of water's presence in the combustion
process.

Does this "smoke" (water vapor) disappear as the engine warms up,
Carter, or does it continue to some
extent? This will pretty much tell you
how bad the apparently leaky head gasket
is leaking. If the "smoke" ceases as
parts expand through heat, it may be
saveable with a re-torquing (don't forget
to readjust the valves post re-torquing).

Otherwise, it's "off with your head" and a
re-check for "flatness" of surfaces before
trying again, IMHO.
