And use a long sanding block that spans the width of the header so you can be 
sure to sand it all evenly.  Less likely to develop a leak if the whole 
affair is true.  Another way would be to rubber cement the emory paper to 
your flat workbench top or tack it over a board and rub the header over that 
to keep it true.
