Well, going to an electric Facet or
SU wouldn't hurt but normally, the
mechanical pump in new condition
is pretty good supplying a stock or
mildly steet tuned application.

'76, eh? You running a "closed" or open
fuel tank system. They came with 
closed circuit. Maybe a "vented" cap
in place of the "non-vented" cap will
"allow" air into the tank to take the place
of displaced gasoline as otherwise a
vacuum might form when the pedal
is pretty well down for awhile as in
"starving" the engine for fuel.

You say the pump is new? New parts
can fail, almost always within a hundred
miles from new. I mean if they have
a defect, it usually shows up almost
immediately.

Anyway, the above comes to mind off-
hand. Hope this helps.
