During WW2 most engineering companies in the UK were turned over to
armament manufacture.
That is why Morris was knighted. For his contribution to the war
effort.

After the war, in order to get the UK trade balances back on track
motor manufacturers were controlled by a complex set of constraint
laws which regulated the amount of steel they could obtain, dependant
on the proportion of production that went overseas. That is why
something like 80% of all MGs ever made were exported and why these
cars are more common in the States than here in the UK. This rationing
went on throughout the 50's and regulations were only lifted in about
1961. It took a long, long time for the UK to get over the food, fuel
and materials rationing etc from the war years.
