Hi Jim,

You can also put in a solenoid gear drive starter.  The teeth of it engage the
ring gear from the engine side, where there's no damage.

You also may have a starter mounting plate with damage to the bearing allowing
the pinion gear to be deflected away from the ring gear and jamming it.
