Well, Bob...

It's sort of like moving the torque curve
up a bit by upgrading a camshaft to a mild
road tune...like from stock to Cooper "S" in terms a little bit more
duration/overlap..
the operative word here being "little"!

You will lose something at the extreme
bottom but not really noticeable
WHEN USED WITH THE LATER MULTI-BLADED FANS.

The original Sprites were made for modern road speeds of the day.
Road speeds in the late
50's weren't that great over here, either.

The little stock BE wasn't meant to cruise
around at 4500 rpm. More like 2500rpm and the water pump pulley was
sized accordingly. So anything above 3K it was
already beginning to cavitate which as you
know, does nothing for cooling efficency.

The Cooper S size pulley was introduced
with the Cooper S "performance" tunes
intended for higher rpm ops.

At the same time (or shortly thereafter) came the multi-bladed fans
which the
larger pulleys were used in conjunction
with. Even prior to this, four-bladed metal
fans for "hot" climates were offered.

Makes sense, doesn't it. What the larger
pulley gave up in low rpm efficiency, was
replaced by not only more blades, but
better AOA's (AOA = angle of attack) for
the blades as well, most especailly with the later plastic fans.

Add in the "deep impeller" alum. pumps,
especially those with no "bypass" or block
the bypass on those pumps so equipped and cooling becomes even better.
Use a
GEO or KIA aluminum radiator and it gets
even better! :)
