Great list Larry.
One of my favorites is King of the Mountain (1981) with Harry Hamlin as
the Mulholland "king" and Dennis Hopper (in his usual crazy character)
as the ex-king/antagonist. Fairly weak story but interesting back road
"racing" scenes.
Daniel: The movie you're looking for may be Hot Rod (also known as Rebel
of the Road) with Pernell Roberts. Check imdb.com for more info. It's
listed as a TV movie from 1979.
