Below is a message I received from Phil. The question to the list is he
correct? I just assumed that that the profile size was 100. Anyone
care to shed any light on the issue? Also at the bottom is a new table
of sizes and the original from my first post, there is a large
difference. Which is correct?

Bill,

Are you sure that the originals are really 100 profile? I always thought that
the "SR" labeled tyres were 82 profile which, if true, throws your numbers out
a little.

I think the 165/70 is the closest in size to the originals, if I'm correct on
the 82 profile thing.

The only comment I would make is that if you have square wheel arches (which
you probably do, if yours is a stock '77), you may encounter some rubbing with
anything over a 165 width tyre. The 1500s sit higher, so you may be OK. I
have 175/60s on mine and I fitted a Panhard Bar to get around the rubbing. My
car is very low, so it sometimes still rubs, depending on who I have in the
passenger seat (!). I will be converting it to round wheel arches some time in
the near future, partly to get around the problem for good and partly because I
like the look.
