I liked the idea of vintage-looking gauges and have picked up various old
Stewart Warner gauges at swaps or Ebay or somewhere. The oil temp gauge I
got was mechanical and I ran it into the sump at a new hole I drilled. The
fitting at the bulb is a sort of compression fitting that needed at brass
compression-to-pipe adapter. Think I found it at Lowes after striking out
at 4 different autoparts stores. The pipe thread end of this screws into an
iron plumbing adaptor (standard tapered pipe threat "NPT"). This step is
necessary becaause you can't braze the brass into the sump-- it melts. I
had the pan off and drilled the appropriate size hole in the flat spot just
ahead of the drain plug. Then I got someone to tig weld my pipe fitting
into the hole. Seems to work well, match my oil pressure gauge, and look
"period." I agree with WST, if you can find an electric gauge that looks
right, going through the drain plug is a lot easier.

P.S. Then I screwed the whole "look" up by putting in a dual EGT gauge, not
watching it as my rear carb probably leaned out for unknown reasons, and
melted two pistons at MidOhio. Oh! You mean 1450 degrees is too hot for
aluminum pistons???? :-(

I am putting an oil cooler in the Bugeye, and on my wish list are two more
gauges, which I will hang from my neato below dash CD player enclosure.
