clutch question

I just finished rebuilding the clutch master, replacing line, hose, and new
slave cylinder on this Sprite of mine. I needed to
make a longer slave cyl. push rod in order to get the clutch to disengage. It
seems to work, but it releases with the pedal almost to the floor
and there is only about an inch of total travel at the slave cyl. When
releasing the pedal, the slave cylinder piston pulls back initially, then
slowly
moves outward. Almost as if it's being sucked back in. Before I made the
longer shaft the slave cylinder was just moving back and forth about an inch.
Something does not seem right. Perhaps the wrong diameter master cyl or
slave? It's a 1968 1275.

The good news is this is the first time it's actually turned the rear wheels
under it's own power in about 25 years, even if it is still on jack stands...
Any suggestions will be welconed.

Thanks,
J
