Well, Jim...

It could just be a coincidence but methinks the intake manifold (or
gasket)
is leaking air. I mean spraying ether
into it will allow it to run (momentarily,
anyway) so either it's getting too much
air or not enough fuel. Then again...

..........go through EVERYTHING you unhooked to change manifolds and
recheck to make sure all is hooked up
the way you found it, before you initially
unhooked it. Work patiently and
methodically, one thing at a time.

Make sure all fits "squarely" with gaskets
properly placed.
And with firex handy, spray some carb
cleaner around the intake system (if you
can get it to run awhile) and see if you
can find any air leaks. If it runs better
as you spray the carb cleaner in and
around the intake manifoldl, well....this
sorta tells the tale with respect to air
leaks.
