Anybody know what the significance of the brace is and if I should use it or 
not?  

I first saw one of those on a 76 that I parted out. I did some checking at the 
time and found that it was called a "torque restraint" so I agree with Peter C. 
that it is some form of safety item...

Even though somebody thinks that it is necessary, I ain't gonna put one on my 
Bugeye!
