the method below is a very old and quite easy way to diagnose noises.   but
be very carefull with what you think you hear!   all bearings and bushings
make some kind of noise when in motion.  definitly try listening to a
number of things on other vehicles to generate a base of refrence when
doing this!  you could condem an asembly because you heard a "noise" and
after much trouble find that the noise it was making is it's "normal" noise!

handled screwdriver and hold the tip on the alt housing while the engine is
running. Put your ear close to the wood handle and listen for a growling
noise. The resonance will let you know if the bearing is headed south. You
can do this on an alt that you know is good as a reference if you need to
know what a good one sounds like...
