drill drainage holes on underside chris!  like 1/4" holes not 1/8" or 1/16"
ones!  and then spray waxol or some other gooey crap inside it to seal it
or possibly por-15?  ya gotta seal the rusting metal or it's a terminal
situation.
also you get rust stains from the stuff that runs out!

now how does it get there?  ummm...idunno?
