allow me to jump in here please.
the last darn thing anyone wants to do with an alloy wheel is sand blast
it!
WHY YOU ASK? lemmie tell ya! sand blasting is a well accepted rust
removal method for steel but alloys do not accept it well at all! reason
being , the sand seriously pulverises the alloy surface leaving a very
rough finish if you choose to polish it. and in adition it also , during
the process it packs down the alloy outer layer giving it a kind of "shot
peen" compacting of the outer layer in the alloy material. that makes the
outer skin of that alloy harder then the inside wich in "some"(not all!)
cases can lead to premature failure , as in cracking over time. baking
soda, crushed walnut shells, or very fine glass beads(yes, they come in
difrent grade grits!) are ok as they clean the surface and the media
deforms or pulverises to dust during the process before it deforms the
alloy surfaces.
just food fer thought on the process before you ruin something you may have
difficulty in replacing or turning a simple clean up project into a huge
amount of work to bring it back after the surface has been ruined!
