What is sounds like you're getting is
timing "scatter" which is symptomatic
of a worn distributor shaft (wobble).

If it's not too bad, an electronic set-up
such as a Crane or PerTronix 
(auto dwell control) will treat the problem
as in an aspirin for a headache.

Or, you can treat the "headache" at it's source by renewing the distributor.
