I've shipped 2 hardtops in the last year... one, a 100-6 hardtop from FL to
IL, and the other, a Sprite hardtop from AL to IL.

The big Healey hardtop went via "Craters and Freighters", and cost somewhere
in the $350 range. That included them picking it up from the E-Bayer I
bought it from, constructing the best shipping carton I've ever seen, and
delivering it to my door via a freight company. www.cratersandfreighters.com

The Sprite hardtop went in a carton that the seller had someone make up. It
wasn't pretty, but effective. It shipped via Greyhound, and with the carton
and shipping, it was about $120. Greyhound certainly is the most economical
option... but there are a few things to be aware of. It is not a "to your
door" delivery. The shipper must take it to the Greyhound terminal, and it
will arrive at the Greyhound terminal nearest your home that you designate.
Ever been to a Greyhound terminal lately? Usually they're not in the nicest
part of town, and the people hanging around them make crack heads look good.
You must babysit the shipment, as they never can give you an exact date of
arrival, and you need to be prepared to get to the terminal to pick it up as
the driver will unload it from the bus, and you'll rely on the overworked
counter guy to get it into the building if you're not there. Most I've seen
could barely find their own ass with both hands... let alone tackle the job
of managing a large box.

So, having said that, I would use Greyhound again, but you need to expect a
fair amount of diligence to ensure it arrives in your grubby little mitts
safely. You get what you pay for....

Ed:
When you shipped the hardtop, did you pack it into some sort of crate?
Seems like something with such a peculiar shape would be easily damaged.
