I think Chuck put it perfectly.  I ran into the same problem on a ribcase I 
had before the 5-sp and I ended up putting a washer on the 1/2 gear shift 
rod (rear side).  I thought it was a MickeyMouse fix but it worked 
perfectly.  Now I find out the factory did it on gold seal gear boxes!  If 
you open the side cover on the gearbox and can see that the balls are 
visible at the front edge of the 1/2 slider, there is a slight chance that 
you can exert lots of force on the shifter while you push the balls in with 
a pointy object while maintaining shift force and turning the shaft with 
your third hand to reach the balls each in turn.  More likely, you'll end up 
stripping the box.
