I guess it has to do with the size. They probably figure that anyone looking
for a tire that size has an econo-car, and they want economy in every
respect. I remember the first VW I owned (1972 real Beetle). I bought it
from the original owner who I knew for the life of the car. It still had the
original Michelin XZX's on it when I bought it in 1981 with just over 100K
miles on it, and they were far from worn out.

I have found the opposite problem trying to get tires that last more than
20K miles on my Saab 9-5. I'm currently using Kumho's with a rating of 360.
The best tread life rating I've been able to find is about 420 for a
225/45-17, and they are EXpensive. And the reason I didn't go with 18"ers
was because those are even worse.

It seems as though they're now all formulated to go 80,000 miles on a
6,000lb SUV.
