John,

You've pretty much described my engine building routine... at least at the
old house. Those that were there to help move the squalor can testify to
this...

So, talking to two race engine builders today, each diametrically opposed
from the other (one of whom is an employee of a builder oft-mentioned on the
list)...the two have completely opposite opinions about most everything from
the main bearing caps to the rocker arms and everything in between. Trying
to decide who's better, when one says about the other "well, of course his
engines are fast, he builds them to run at 10,000 RPM", or words to that
effect.

Hmmm...which would you let do your motor?

Ron:

Don't listen to those guys. They need to make a living by making themselves
indispensable.

Rebuild it yourself, in the back yard, on a piece of 8x12 blue tarp (after
shoveling away the snow).

Use a good adjustable wrench and Vicegrips. A Harbor Freight torque wrench
is good. Clean everything well with a shop rag. Don't bother measuring too
much, machinists don't make mistakes. And be sure to schmear hylomar on all
then old gaskets and re-use them. Hell, forget the gaskets and use
Permatex!

Then meet me next summer at Grattan.
