This thread has gotten my thinking about a couple of project Midgets, and
what changes I might make. The cars are a Mk.I, and a Mk.I 1/2. As far as
suspension goes, I'm going to stick with what God and Geoff Healey provided
the car with, although I'm contemplating utilizing the adjustable
Armstrongs. I'm not a proponent of big, fat tires on old cars, for a couple
of reasons: The main reason is that I drive my cars when it rains, and I
hate the wet weather performance characteristics of big tires on light cars
(translation: they hydroplane too easily). Another reason is that I don't
feel I need to prove anything, on the street. So, my cars will have 155x13s
on them. Period.
The MkI will get a set of discs, from a donor Midget, and suitable lining
material will be installed.
The Datsun 5 speed conversion sounds like the way to go, and I'll start
scrounging local junk yards after the holidays.
What I'm really undecided about is what engine to use. I traded the
original engine, from the Mk.I, to a racing buddy, 24 years ago (for a
stock, low mileage 1275), so it's long gone. I've got a few 1098s (but I
think they may be all 10CDs :( ), as well as a few 1275s to choose from.
One 1275 will be rebuilt to stock specs, and dropped into our Mk I 1/2
vintage racer, and carry my son and I through SCCA drivers school, before
being replaced w/a proper 10CC, for vintage events.
My question to you guys (since it's been nearly 40 years since I've actually
driven a 1098 Midget) is this: For fast touring work, frequently on
Interstates, in company of OD equipped TR-3s, and TR-4s, can a fairly stock
1098 deliver the goods, or should I just give up and throw a 1275 in there?
Given the Spridget's limited tank capacity, when traveling w/the above
mentioned TRs, fuel economy IS a consideration. Keep in mind that this will
be a Datsun 5sp. equipped car.
I look forward to hearing from you guys.
Thanks.
Bud Osbourne
