"How many complain about their Datsun 5 speed crunching into second gear in cold
weather"

IT DOES NOT! Or more specifically, it doesn't have to.

With no unfriendliness or criticism intended.....this is a function of an
"attitude" rather than a "mechanical" problem.

My '85 VW GTi demonstrates the same "trait" in cold weather. Both transmissons
are blessed with very "strong"
2nd gear synchros. Guess they figure second gear usually takes a beating so they
built this particular one "better"?

The only way it's going to "crunch" under these circumstances is if you fail to
take into account the specific traits of YOUR
machinery and "force" it, rather than work
"with" it.

It's a machine. If it doesn't want to "go" there's a good, logical reason for
it. Unlike
it's human operators, there's no emotion or "mood" involved.

Besides.....we've got "options".

Warm the damn thing up properly and/or switch to synthetic lubricant for the
cold season. Or modify your technique so
you can initially skip second gear when it's
"cold" (in cold wx) and you're running a little late so as to properly warm-up
your
machinery before hittin' the "go button".
