I finally got a chance to tear apart the junkyard 1275 I dragged home the
other day.
There was a wasp nest inside one of the carbs, another inside the #2 cylinder.
The plugs had been out for a long time and there was much rust in the bores
and 5 quarts of tan yogurt in the crankcase. Already .040 over, the rusty
bores will need resleeving. Rods good, crank .010 under but good, cam and
lifters pitted and shot. Head was OK, but will need hardened exhaust seats
and stellite exhaust valves. Intake valves look good, valve guides good,
rocker shaft OK, timing gear good. Intake manifold broken, exhaust manifold
fine, carbs are rebuildable.
Oddly, the oil/water 'yogurt' protected the lower end from any serious rust.
The tough part was trying to decide if it should go to oil recycling or
wastewater treatment. Could have gone either way.

Although I've got two good sets of .040 over pistons, I guess it makes the
most sense to stay standard after the re-sleeving to give the next rebuilder
some room for options.

Though I'm ready and willing to go new if I must, does anyone have a set of
standard pistons for a 1275 ? How about a stock intake manifold?

Halfway through this strip job, I stood there with greasy/rusty paws and
relaized how much fun I was having. Tearing down an old motor, diagnosing the
ailments, planning the new motor that will result. God I love this hobby! No
joke, this is really more fun than most any other hobby I have. The only
drawback is sitting at the DNA bench on Monday and trying to do science stuff
with stiff mechanic's fingers that never really get clean.

Regards,
Glen Byrns
