Thanks for the reply.

If the harmonic balancer has slipped, why would everything line up
statically?  As I mentioned, the TDC mark is right on the TDC pointer
when the #1 piston is at TDC and the valves look right - both valves
on #4 equally open.  Surely the rubber can't be "flexing" 20 degrees"
under rotation!

I'm driving the car (and more importantly enjoying it!), but I'm
really confused, and I'm trying to understand why the timing seems so
strange.
