Well, I knew the meaning of gobsmacked... I was just looking for anything
remotely resembling reason behind the phrase....

been credited with saying that England and America are two great nations 
separated only by a common language.  You can add to "fanny", "fag", and 
"pants" the term "knackered", for it is something that we have all 
experienced.  ("Knackered" is to be beat, wiped out, tired, exhausted, 
etc.)
