Have had a similar problem lock cylinder that I limpped along for quite a
while.  With the key 90 degrees to the way it would normally slide into the
lock, push in until the detent ball is clear of the keyhole, then, without
letting up on the pressure, flip the key to match the slot and it should
slide in.
