Linda,
Good to hear from ya. We thoughts you was MIA. I had my own Pinky out tonight.
(Car that is.)

Getting to be Vintage time at the race tracks. Anyone out there going to Lime
Rock or The Glen out here in the soggy northeast?

For those who have never attended, Lime Rock is a very nice weekend. Very
compact event with usually a wealth of fine machinery, often notable.

Watkins has an event that begins in the Village of Watkins Glen with events in
town and a tour for eligible cars of the street course. Watkins also has a
motoring library which is definitely worth a visit. (Not sure of the hours, so
check first.) The glen is a beautiful 3.3 mile course on the outskirts of the
town which was the home of the US Grand Prix (Formula One) for many years
(61-80?). The course has a one mile back straight and numerous elevation
changes. It hosts open-wheel, endurance, and Nascar events as well as SCCA and
club weekends.

My first event at the Glen was 1974 and Mark Donohue in the intimidating
Porsche 917-30 with my friend Fred. We came in the back entrance and unfamiliar
with the roaring thunder I could hear from a mile away, I asked "What is that?"
to which Fred answered: "The start of the race.".

I saw the whistling turbo Renaults there year after year and talked with the
French mechanics (If you could call it conversing. They didn't speak English.)
I stood at the nose of the Ferrari when Gilles Villeneuve stood on the seat and
walked across the wide bodywork of his ground effects car. I stood motionless
before George Harrison in the Lotus Pits for obvious reasons. I walked by Peter
Gregg and Johnny Rutherford at endurance races and was pushed aside by Clay
Regazonni exiting his motorhome amidst the Niki Lauda mania in 1975 and I stood
by 12 cylinder Alfa Romeo-engined Brabham F1 cars during ear-splitting tuning
and Ferrari GTO's while they vibrated my entire ribcage.

In 1980, I had press passes and watched an entire race less than 15 feet from
screaming F1 cars. At other times, I walked amongst idols in the paddock in the
form of Brian Redman, Grahan Hill, Jim Hall, and Dickie Smothers among others.

Glorius experiences that anyone interested in racing can appreciate.
