I've had less than favorable results with an inexpensive Harbor Freight
auto-darkening helmet and ended up buying a better one (got a good deal
through someone who picked up a few of them at a SEMA show). Ironically, I
haven't done much welding since then.

On the other hand, Paul A is getting good use out of a Harbor freight unit
... go figure.

My advice? Don't bother with eBay. Instead, try one of the Harbor Freight
units, if there's a store nearby, keep the receipt and return it promptly if
you are dissatisfied. While you are in the process of trying out the HF unit
you might be able to do some sort of comparison with a unit from the welding
shop. My guess is that you will be suitably impressed by the more expensive
shield.
