My wife has completely surprised me, and purchased from Moss the following:
1. Horn push;
2. Horn brush; and
3. Slip ring.
Okay, you guys, I'm getting ready to have a go at re-installing the original
steering wheel back on my AN5. I need a little help with 4 points, and
wonder whether someone out there would be able to help me with the
following, please:
1. When inserting the horn brush in the small hole in the steering wheel
is the idea that the spring end of the brush will end up touching the circle
of metal on the slip ring and the other end touching the metal strip on the
bottom of the horn push? (I'm fairly confident it is, but would like to be
sure.)
2. Moss says the plastic base on the slip ring should be removed for this
application. Do I just open up the brass ring clips, take off the plastic
and close the clips back up? (I called Moss about this, but the Tech
Dept., was so busy they need two days notice of questions!)
3. Are there any other rings/washers which go on before or after the slip
ring on the steering column? I can't see how the ring sits tight in the
steering wheel. If I just put the ring, with or without the plastic base,
how is it held tight to keep contact with the brush and for it to move as
the steering wheel moves? (It would be easier, if having taken off the
existing wheel, it was just a matter of reversing the process.
Unfortunately, the exisiting wheel has a different "fixing" set up.)
4. Do I then just put the slip ring (and any other rings you tell me are
necessary) and the steering wheel on the steering column, and tightened up
the steering wheel nut? How important is it to torque the nut, or can I
simply make it good and tight? (I don't have a torque wrench, and will
happily buy one, if it's thought I should.) The 3 books I have say very
little to help with straight forward jobs, and I thought getting some
thoughts in the matter would be the best way to go.
I actually think I've got it right except for any other needed rings, the
tight seat of the slip ring and the torque point.
