That is one of my thoughts. I thought I had it right. The steering column
side is the taller one, yes? I did stupidly put the trans mount in backwards

Do you have the mounts reversed? L/R?
I usually leave the metal part of the steering wheel side bolted to the 
car, undo the other metal part from the body. Keep both rubber mounts
bolted to the metal parts and lower the engine in place.
Once it's close, bolt on the passenger mount loosely to the engine then 
lower it and bolt it to the car. The steering side should drop onto the 
rubber mount with a minor bit of persuasion.
But if the metal parts are reversed, you'll be cursing all night long.
