To my knowledge (and having been a VW-Porsche-Audi dealer), the federal law
that mandated roll bars in ALL convertibles produced after 1981 has never
been repealed. VW was the first manufacture to comply; Rabbit.
As popularity rose and more American manufactures produced open cars, a
'blind-eye' was turned regarding the law...like so many laws.
Somewhat like the federal "85" mph speedometers of the early to mid '80s.
