I am cooking my rear brakes..

What would cause them to stay on when the brake pedal is released?

mkIIa sprite with one double piston wheel cylinder each side.

It started last week when i smelled brake or clutch.. the heat caused the
plastic centre cap on my alloy wheel to relax and fall off, which i heard, and
saw both rear wheels were hot. The brake linings had cooked and broken up.
minimal drum scoring, but needed new rubber boots for the wheel cyls.

Installed new linings yesterday, adjusted to acheive a free spinning wheel..
drove a few km....cooking again.
I backed off the adjusters, got the wheel to spin free, then applied the
pedal, released, and there is still brake on the wheel when i spin it by hand.

  advice appreciated
