Ryan,
That isn't actually an "overflow bottle", it is an expansion tank. The 
difference being that the tank is part of the pressurized system. Due to the 
nature of the car, the radiator is not the highest point of the water 
system, therefore it does not make an appropriate place for air bubbles to 
collect or for filling the system. Ideally, the expansion tank should be 
about half full when cool and the radiator should be full. The cap on the 
expansion tank is, obviously, the pressure cap for the system and it might 
not be a bad idea to replace it, since any leakage should have come from the 
spout off of it rather than the cap. You might also want to do a compression 
check just to verify the state of the head gasket, although I doubt that it 
has a problem.
