The regular Vega had an aluminum block and iron head (Cosworth was
all-aluminum twin-cam). Early Vegas had issues with the valve stem seals
causing them to burn oil. They also would lose coolant from am marginal
cooling systwm, and so would overheat, and this would destroy the block.

Regarding the V8, IMHO they were put in mostly to go very fast in a
straight line about 1/4 mile at a time. That's more the case now, as
speed parts that were available in the 70s for the Vega 140 are not made
anymore and difficult to find used. You can still find factory V8 Monza
stuff that will bolt into the Vega, and aftermarket V8 stuff is still
around.

I thought that was because the original engines had problems.. all 
aluminum or something comes to mind..
