David,
I have a friend in the MG club here on Long Island that absolutely swears by
this trick. He welds a steel plate - maybe 15 to 18 inches square - onto the
bottom of his jackstands. I used his set when we pulled the engine last
summer because he says he won't work on a car sitting on normal stands like
mine anymore. To demonstrate the stability of his alterations, he shoved and
pulled violently on the car after it was up there. It was a bit scary as I
didn't know he was about to do this, but I was really impressed. I think you
could have backed into the car with my Mazda and not knocked it off those
stands. I have not yet altered my stands, but really think I will next time
I'm around some friend with a welder.
